JO FALLOON
How did you get into yoga?
My first ever experience of yoga was a Bikram class back when it was in a little room at the back of Wilding Park, which I attended with my tennis-mad son Jakob, his mate Jordan, and Jordan’s Mum Steph. The room was heated and humidified by oil heaters and continuously boiling kettles. I loved the heat and the sheer physicality of the practice. Life became busy over the next few years with work, study, family, together with other physical pursuits, so yoga went a bit by the wayside. It wasn’t until a chronic injury flared up that I decided to return, visiting a place that I’d heard about called Flow Yoga, owned by people that I knew and respected from my Bikram days- Victoria, Greta, Jess, and Tanya. I soon became totally hooked. I loved the physical practice, the sense of community, and the choice of styles led by diverse and highly-skilled teachers. My injury healed, my fitness was maintained, but there was something else that I noticed in the form of a subtle shift in my ability to cope with stress. My anxiety levels plateaued as I became more aware of habitual behaviours and default ways of thinking. I recognised this amazing tool that I now had to support me in my daily life.
What yoga training have you completed?
I’ve had the pleasure of participating in a variety of trainings, including 200 hours with
Contemporary Yoga (an integrated approach to the science, philosophy, tradition and art of teaching yoga), 200 hours Hansa yoga (a therapeutic approach) together with a wide range of workshops and trainings under Karla Brodie & Neal Ghoshal (Restorative Yoga), Leila Stewart (core awareness), Tiffany Cruikshank (Yoga Anatomy), and Jason Crandall (sequencing). I’m a bit of a yoga geek and have a pile of books that I dig into a fair bit together with the plethora of online sources available!
I am also incredibly thankful to all the teachers at flow who have helped shape my practice and from whom I have learned so much: Vic, Greta, Tanya, Tristin, Pele, Nicole, Nathan, Johnny, Abbie, Keishana, to name but a few! I am incredibly proud to be a part of this awe-inspiring space we now know as Flow Wellbeing.
What yoga styles do you like to teach?
My passion lies within a functional yoga approach, where through mindful movement the body can develop strength, mobility, and stability. All bodies can benefit from the poses in their own unique way, enjoying a practice that is inclusive, healthy, safe, nourishing, and fun independently from age, background, body shape or flexibility. In my mind such an approach filters through the various types of yoga we have at Flow: Power, Hot yoga, Flow, Yin, Yin Yang and Restorative. Each has its own set of attributes, and I am someone who loves a range of experiences, both teaching-wise and within my own personal practice. Teaching has taken my experience of yoga to a whole
